Lost/ spongy brakes 280se 1983

Hi,

I have a 280 se 126 1983 model. Brakes have become really spongy (can push right to floor) there is no loss of fluid in the res. so i was just wondering how to test to see if it is a fault with the brake booster or the master cylinder..? Brake lines have no air in them- have been checked/ bled/ so am assuming the fault is up near the mastercylinder or b/booseter..

thanks in advance for your help. It is my first Mercedes and I have never driven anything like (I feel like a South African Diplomat) it so I really want to get this car back on the road.

Can you pump the brake up to be firm or is it to the floor every time? Have you checked the pads?

You could call X to the Z Xibit to pimp your brakes....

Or bleed your brakes and check that your master cylinder is in good shape otherwise you will have to replace it.

same thing happened to my 300SE a few months ago- the rear calipers were leaking quite badly upon close inspection, I replaced them and the problem is solved. They're relatively inexpensive. Check them out!

Pull your vacuum line off the booster. Commonly you will find brake fluid in there if your master cylinder is leaking.

Sorry for the late reply guys- have been on holidays.... I can pump the brake up to be firm- it's not on the floor all the time. i am going to check the pads and the vacuum hose like the other 2 members have advised and get back to you.

cheers
