ASR Light on 1991 300SE (Red vs. Yellow)

Hi All,
I just bought a 1991 300SE, according to the owner’s manual the ASR light is yellow located between the check engine light and the ABS light. My car has a solid red light with no ASR inscription on it? Does anyone know what the difference is? Could this be a replacement dash? Any insight into this will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

Are you sure your 300SE has ASR? I understood that ASR was an option on for V8's. I've seen ASD instead on 6 and 4 cylinder models. Sounds like you may have a Euro model 300SE.... any more info on it?

The 1991 ASR light.

Going by the 1991 S class US spec sales brochure, the best I can figure is this:

You could NOT buy the ASR and THE ASD options BOTH at the same time for the 300SE. But you could buy either of them as an option for this model.

When they came on, a small orange box on the speedometer cluster (right at near where 160 kph would be) would illuminate, with a picture inside the little orange box, with an exclamation point inside a triangle would light up.

The ASD illumination light, located, between the CEL on right, and the SRS light on the left, in the catalogue, *appears* to be red, and the CEL appears orange. But the colors aren't clear and there is no picture for the ASR light, in the picture, but its (ASR) location would be where the ASD lamp shows.

I specifically looked for and purchased, a US spec '91 560SEC WITHOUT wither the ASR or ASD option. When you turn on the ignition all the warning lights along the bottom of the dashboard illuminate for a moment, to show you the BULBS are ok, and on my car, where the ASR or ASD lights would be, between the CEL on right and the SRS on the left, show two blank, unilluminated spaces where the warninbg light would be.

Does this shed a "lght" on things or muddy the waters further?

Ask mclare, he has a '91 560SEC with the ASR, and it gave him a lot of trouble, where his ASR light is, and what color it is.

For US spec 1991 300SE vehicles, on the last page of the 1991 US spec S class w126 AND R129 sales brochure, ASR is mentioned SPECIFICALLY, as a 300SE option.

ASD was NOT available on this model.

I've yet to see a 300SE/L with an ASR option, only ASD.

I do know that the ASD option was not available for the V8's... and remember, the ASD and ASR are totally different things. ASD is an EXCELLENT option, while ASR is what can give you problems.

Here are pictures of a 300SE with ASD:

Yes, I do have ASR on my car and it is non-functional and will stay that way.

Jim is correct in that it is a major pain in the ass and an option to be avoided at all costs. He is a little off (understandably) in the location of the warning lights.

There are two:

The first one is the "System Failure" light as Jim pointed out correctly, on the dash in between the CEL and the SRS lights. I believe it is red. I can check later when I go to the shop and look at it.

The second one is the "System Engaged" light and that is in a little different position than Jim described. It is in the speedo, but at the top under the "90" mph (maybe Jim meant 160 Kph? I am sure he did) and above the ODO. That light comes on whenever you do a maneuver in the car where the ASR has to take over from you. That is what that light does.

When the one on the dash comes on, bad things happen. The car goes into what is called the "Limp Home Mode" where the power of the engine output is reduced by ONE THIRD by means of taking away the full throttle control from you and reducing the amount of power you can give the car.

This is why I am removing it. Even if it worked, I am a good enough driver having gone to race school, that I can fully control the car in all aspects of a skid. It also disables the ABS since they are interlinked. So when you lose ASR, it takes out the ABS too. Both of which I can live without.

To see if your car has ASR, look on your brake ABS unit and it is larger by twice than the regular unit and it will say "ASR" on top.

If your ASR light comes on then it is in the "Limp Home" Mode and the power is retarded unless you defeat the TPS as I did.

ASR

Thank you for your insight into my ASR questions. 1. There is no lettering on the solid red light in-between the ABS and CEL lights. 2. I ran the VIN. through the Russian site and it was correct except for one option, 268 located in the number 30 spot under equipment. I still do not know what option this is. The Russian site didn't recognize the option 68 in my VIN? I surmise it is actually option 268. None of the options listed mention ASR or ASD.
