Hello! I'm fairly new to this forum, just bought a beautiful 1987 420SEL. I've come to appreciate the real beauty of these cars, by reading your threads. Thanks!

Anyways, I have a fuel leak that has popped up. I've done my searches, but have a quick question or 3. I've traced it to the fuel pump, actually it seems it's from the bolt in the attached picture. I am mechanically inclined, but not a mechanic. And have noticed how somewhat simple repairs are.

How do I go about replacing this? Through my searches sounds like there is a washer underneath? And how do I stop the flow of fuel while I'm replacing?

Sorry, if these are very simple questions.

thanks.

They are crush washers and are available at the dealer. First, try tightening the bolt at the end, it's really a 'banjo' fitting.

From the pic, it seems the pump electrical connections are wrapped with electrical tape. There are rubber boots for that also available from the dealer, or other parts places.

Since you are new, be aware the tank is mounted in the trunk area behind the rear seats and the panel at the back of the trunk.

There is a fuel hose that goes from the bottom of the tank, through the floor and into the first fuel pump. In that line is a connection to the accumulator. The fuel exits the first pump and is routed to the second pump and from there through the filter and on to the engine and fuel distrubutor. There is a fuel cooler that works when the A/C is on.

There are some differences between the Euro grey import, and the US spec cars.

The forum archive has a wealth of information available at your finger tips.
Please make sure to carefully read the 'Welcome to the Forum' tutorial sticky on top.
It will show how to run a forum search (needs words of more than 3 letters), etc., and save valuable time.

Also, the service manual sticky lists all the pdf files. If you post with the request for a specific file(s), someone will post it for you.
Cheers
