Had the AA out to look at my missfiring 420SE today- and with some tinkering followed by the hardest thrashing of its life, it seems to be running ok. So much so, I've got it running back on LPG. Horray!
It is smoking (blue) now however. It didn't smoke when laid up at the end of March, but now its like chucking it out when pushed. I've been told the valve guides/seals and piston rings are to blame at an un-rebuilt 172k, but need a quick fix to get her MoT'd whilst I save my pennys to have the heads done. Didn't do this when parked up though, bah! :crybaby2:
The following have been suggested:
-Ametech Engine Restore Oil
-Lucas Engine Oil Stop Leak
-Wynns Stop Leak.
I'm not a fan of these products, but have been told they could work to get the car to stop billowing blue smoke for the MoT.
I would say you have some mildly stuck rings. I would add some Marvel Mystery Oil to your oil and a little in the fuel. It is an upper cylinder lubricant that does work wonders. Save your money, cars do not wear out sitting still, you need the rings loosened up, probably nothing more.
Well, @ 172 kilometers (I'm assuming) your heads should be OK.. valve guide seals may be giving up on you..or the aforementioned stuck rings, but typically flogging the snot out of a car will loosen said sticky ring up IME>
172k miles, sadly not KM's! Seems odd it didn't smoke when parked up though :crybaby2:
Have no idea what oil its running with- still what the last owner put in. A VERY long time ago. Way overdue for a service- it is on my (long) list of things to do.
Marvel Mystery Oil- whats that?
The AA man recomended Lucas Engine Oil Stop Leak-has anyone used this here, and to what effect?
when i used to drive my car daily it did have a fair amount of smoke from the exhaust, not to much though. but what i did was ran 20w50 oil with 2 quarts of lucas oil treatment. it slowed the smoking and the oil consumption WAY down. so with a fresh oil change and some lucas oil treatment it should help.
MMO is a super-refined oil that actually smells like peppermint. It is the absolute best oil on the planet for air tools. It is a upper-end specific lubricant that is used to both maintain and remove varnish and carbon from rings, valves, and combustion chambers. I was turned onto this by my first MB teacher in the early 70's. Diesels love it, and it will either eliminate a host of other problems, but used with an oil, it is even better.
No, I do not work for them, only know the results. For sticky lifters, sluggish rings after sitting a while, etc. it does wonders. I would suggest an oil change to some Castrol GTX 20-50 and a pint of this or Risilone. After recalling you run LPG, and there is no lubrication as a gas or solvent effects of fuel on your rings. I would suggest that you need an upper end cylinder lubricant. If MMO is not available, you may want to try Risilone, if that is not available, try Sea Foam.

no offense to those who are in the category (im only 19 keep in mind haha)
the old timers swear by it, and cars among other things ive worked with, they turn out to be great advisers when it comes to techniques and remedies...
if its not available to the OP, you think he would be able to get it online?
i dont see why not
Sadly though, Marvel Mystery Oil is not available, nor can I find Risilone, or Sea Foam on any UK suppliers web sites... do you know of a firm in the states that would ship cheaply?
Will change the oil to 20/50 and see how it goes.
Could the sticking ring be the cause of my original warm up missfire? Seems to have dissapered after I gave it a thrashing.
Absolutely! I would then call around to the refurbishers or dealers of Caterpillar equipment. They have the best oil analysis systems in the world. Any additives they would either sell or recommend would be faultless advice.
Ask about upper cylinder lubricant additives specifically.
We only seem to have stuff like Redex, to add to the petrol which is an upper cylinder lubricant/cleaner type of thing. I wish we had this marvel oil. My garage put in something called 'hydraulic valve lifter' recently which seemed to be pretty good but i hadnt heard of it before. Rex let me know if you come across anything good?
