Does anyone know what size socket I'm going to need to get that thing out? I had read in another post 36mm... not even close. It looks like it might be 2in, but I'd rather not keep wasting nine dollars at a shot on sockets I'll never use again.

46 mm should do it.

Mercedessource.com sells a socket custom-made for this purpose. It's actually 1 & 13/16 inches with a 17mm hex head welded on top so you can turn it with a box-head wrench or 3/8 drive socket. The theory is that you'll be able to access it in the limited space available; in practice, I found it was still too big - though a third hand holding everything up against gravity might have made the difference. I took my tank out anyway because I wanted to clean it thoroughly. Note also that this same size tool works on the fuel tank sender.
