This is a performance orientatd thread for all interested in what can and has been done to the W126. This is not just an index of links to previous discussions, but all are welcome to ask and talk about all things perfromance regarding the W126.
I recently got a 1990 560sel (california version 70k miles) The car runs strong, but im curious as to what can best be done to mimic the euro (tri y) exhaust. Is there a way to get close to ECE power numbers still keeping a high flow cat of some sort?. The budget Im targeting for this project is 1500-2000 including install. Is it possible to get close to the ECE power levels for this price? (btw. because of living in MI, emissions testing is not a concern, but I would like to avoid excessive exhaust drone)
TRY-Y's or AMG headers with down pipes are rare and pricey. The ECE engine not only had different headers, but different cams, higher compression pistons, just to name a few.
MB indie jhodg5ck aka Jonathan has taken apart several of these engines in his shop, and is still not sure what all the differences are.
The 'drone' is more due to removed resonators than anything else IMO.
Some members have installed TRY-Y's with low loss magnaflow cats, and hush puppy resonators.
Check the 'Welcome to the Forum' announcement / tutorial on top and search the forum archive for 'exhaust system' et al.
If I remember correctly, 48hp dyno chart showed a 29 hp gain with try-y's, low resistance magnaflow cats, and hush puppy resonators.
Cheers
Thanks. based on that, Ill probably just wait for another set of the tri-y headers/downpipes to show up on here or german ebay..and not worry about the rest of the ece stuff. If I could get close to that 29hp gain that would be fine w/ me (also going to check that other forum). Alternatively to the original route, is there a good known source that will durplicate the tri-y headers from a picture or diagram?. (dont want to necessarily go to a random exhaust shop)

Based on the research I've done (with significant help from Benzworld) it has become clear that the best (and perhaps only?) effective way to increase performance keeping "German sound" is with tri-y or AMG headers& downpipes. What other parts (mufflers, cats, resonators etc) would you guys recommend for a complete setup (starting with California spec exhaust 560sel)? Thanks in advance
AMG Camshafts with solid lifters, but only after having upgraded to tri-Ys and better fliwing exhaust line. To get more mixture in you have to make sure it gets out first.
As a FYI, I have a real set of AMG headers up on ebay at the moment... I priced them fairly to what the replica headers sold for. They're not as pretty and shiny as the replicas but definitely do what they're supposed to
Thought that this might be of some help. The next project will be, port/polished heads, solid lifters and AMG cams or same heads but hydraulic lifters and ECE cams. Not sure which direction yet.

My 300SD has electric fan, monark injectors, cold air intake, mettalic brake pads, wvo able, but using diesel last two years.will do propane injection soon.
I know this is going to bring grate debate but the idea I am going on here is there is no substute for cubic inches. my car is a euro 1985 500sel the engine came from a US 560sel, now what's has spurred the swap is the 5.0 just does not make the power I want and it has head gaskets that are starting to leak, the thing I forgot to do is take the cars computer from the downer car. this car is my daily driver makes a 20 mile commute every day
So i work in a grocery store in a small town where i drive my '83 300SD. this guy comes through my line at the checkstand and tells me that if i put a straightpipe on my exhaust and disable this somethin-or-other thing that i'll get more power. this guy is for sure a tweeker and i don't want his help but does anyone know where i can get turbodiesel specific performance information?... seems easier if this forum had a diesel specific board.
I'm not sure if you've looked at it but the ALDA is one point you can adjust the amount of incoming fuel. It's tied into the over boost control. First start with plumbing a boost gauge to see where you are to start with. It sounds like NathanD has a great start on performance tuning his SD.
Kevin Casillas you are right about there's no substitute for displacement. I would love to swap a 560 into my 420. Do you have the dual snorkel air cleaner assembly? It's a shame these cars came along during a time in the US when emissions tuning was still being worked out. The US market missed out on the higher output motors
Is it possible to fit an e55 supercharger on a m117 engine? And is it possible to get it to work properly?
Ok little about the car Car is an w126 500se 85mod pre facelift (euro car) and has a Vems efi system fitted.
I have the opportunity to buy one e55amg charger of a friend but i have a few conserns.
What can i do to the eletric clutch on the charger?
and thinking this charger is made for an 550 engine is it even possible to get it to work fo real on a 500engine?
I have free access to cnc machineso im ot worried about adapter plates, brackets, and bigger o smaller pulleys
Yeah, it's a whole lot more. The intake was the big key to unleashing the torque.
You can read about it here. Carobu the builder mostly does old Ferrari and Lambo motors, but they did 117's back in the day and were excited to take on the challenge.
We're doing another group buy for the 19mm rear sway bars for Gen II W126 models. Take a look at this thread for more details.
