I have a question regarding my 1987 420SEL; on a cold start, for the first minute or so, when the transmission shifts I can hear the engine and see on the tachometer an increase of 300 RPM's before it shifts to a higher gear. The shift is smooth but it sounds kind of like the transmission is slipping briefly. It only does this when the engine & transmission is cold and if I'm very light on the throttle, it doesn't do this.
Does something need to be serviced or repaired, or is this normal for this chassis? The vehicle currently has 63k miles on it.
Thank you,

make sure your throttle linkeage is adjusted correctly. this condition can occur when the throttle is not adjusted correctly. also check the engine vacuum, incorrect vacuum levels can cause shifting issues as well.

I had this problem when I first got my 380SE. The throttle linkage to the transmission which is visible just behind the air cleaner was loose. Reseting it to the place where the set screw had obviously been fixed the problem. Recently I tried setting it according to the manual and ended up with this problem again so I put it back as it was. Yeah, if it ain't broke.... The position it is in now brings the two ends in closer than what my interpretation of the manual says is "correct" but it's entirely possible I'm not reading the instructions correctly.
On cold starts the trans upshifts are delayed to assist in engine warm up. If it shifts normally when warm then this is a normal condition. My old 300SE did the same thing if I started it up and drove off immediately but if I gave it just 2 minutes or so of warm up the trans shifted normally.
