My 300sdl has cylinder 1 and 2 that produce a nailing sound at idle.
I verified this by loosening the injector supply lines, one at a time, which made the sound go away and made the engine run rough.
I replaced all injectors with Bosch rebuilt injectors. The nailing remains.
Other than the nailing sound at idle, the car runs great, over 25mpg and adequate power.
I read another thread on this topic for a 300sd nailing, adjusting the valves was mentioned as a remedy.
The 300sdl has hydraulic valves, could they be needing adjustment?
I removed the #1 injector and saw a fairly clean pre chamber.
Is the nailing hurting the engine?
What else can be the cause?

I've found that the 617 has it's own sound. Kill the fuel to and injector and no sound. You can try to move the injectors around but you'll probably still have a diesel sound at idle. Does it sound different above 1000rpm? Put some Diesel Clean in her and haul ass up to towards Ice House on hwy50 and see how she does afterwards

At 1000 RPM the sound goes away. Diesel Clean....where is this obtained? I have moved the injectors around and the sound remains with cylinders 1 and 2.
If its not hurting the engine, I can live with it.

It's much easier to find than the LubroMoly products. Check out any of the local auto parts places. Walmart also carries the stuff. My bad, it's spelled Diesel Kleen. Here's the bottle: PS302512 DIESEL KLEEN ADDITIVE 32 OZ
I prefer the stuff in the grey bottle over the white since it will boost cetane higher than the white. Put in the recomended amount and don't be afraid to drive the car like an angry meth addict. Do a search on Italian Tune Up. These cars do suffer if they are babied when you drive them and will not show you their true potential.
Or, run her on a can or two of diesel purge...we've had Great luck with it!
The kleen makes a good maint. additive but the purge Really cleans out the junk...and as AA said, run her Out! The diesels really do better when driven Hard.

I'll try the Diesel Purge. Where is the "junk" located? I removed the intake tube that crosses over the valve cover and its thick with black carbon junk. I disconnected the EGR, so hopefully I won't be adding more crust. When I get a chance I want to remove the intake manifold and have it cleaned.
