Mercedes Benz Roadside Assistance - not so free. FYI

I learned something new today. Stupid me left his lights on all day only to be welcomed to a dead battery. After a few minutes of panic I remembered the 24 hr. Free roadside service. I called them and after taking my information and not being able to find the VIN in the system I was put on hold only to be told later that MB USA does not provide emergency service to a Euro spec vehicle. I was promptly called back by a local MB technician who said he would jump start me for a mere $107!

As luck would have it a cabbie happened to drive by and gave me a complimentary boost! So I tipped the guy and was on my way. So much for Free MB emergency service.

I thought MB would come to the rescue no matter where your car was from. Apparently that's not true for all you Euro owners in the US.

Just an FYI.

There is no free lunch. As Euro Spec did not came through MB-USA, they did not make any money on it, so they are not going to offer you any free services.

That is true because the Euro's were not sold here in the U.S. and do not have the same specs. I am the 2nd owner of my 420 SEL and in the last few months I have used the MB Road Side service 3 times and have not been charged once. 2 jumps and a tire change because I cleaned the trunk out and forgot to put the lug wrench back in. Plus they are quick. I think the longest I waited was 22 minutes...

I understand the making money on me part. That makes perfect sense. I just assumed it was free based on comments I've seen here before saying the service if free no matter what kind of an MB, year or who's driving it. The reality is that it's free to US spec cars only.

Of course they didn't make any money on the guy that's the second or third owner either and they still apparently come out.

Lesson learned. I'm not complaining, I was just a bit surprised at the time and was looking forward to a cute 20 something female techie come to my rescue. Instead I got a good samaritan cabbie with two front teeth missing.

Yep that road service is free to NA cars only and to any owner at any time (they're open). They charge for the parts, but the service call is free and they will tow you to their Dealership free too.

Used the service last month on my flat battery. Turns out it wasn't holding charge and the battery was 5 years old. So, $200 and a MB white battery later... car is driving fine

This popped into my mind while reading the thread - If your car must be towed to the dealership for repair, for free of course, do you incur service charge once the car enters the repair facility?

Regards, John

I blew a coolant hose on Thanksgiving a year ago...unfortunately, I was on my way to a Turkey dinner in the middle of nowhere and I had a hard time getting anybody on the phone since everything was closed for the holiday. Fortunately, I was in the free towing radius of my AAA membership because when I called MB, they told me that my 1987 420SEL was no longer covered. So there seem to be considerable discrepancies in services rendered, apparently depending on who you get on the phone.

Sounds like there may be a 20 year limit. I guess that's reasonable unless of course there was some sort of contract stipulating otherwise.

Our cars are very reliable. I can only imagine some of the other more problematic models that came after our series since the quality went down and the problems went up.

also fyi in areas such as the NJ turnpike, they aren't "allowed" to come there. I needed a jumpstart at one of the rest stops there and when they learned where i was, they said sorry, cant help you.
