I just had my odometer repaired after a couple of the little gears broke and it stopped working altogether. However, what I find now is that the mileage being logged on the odo is not accurate. Prior to it stopping all together I noticed that it was not tracking miles properly, it appeared to log about 50% of the actual miles. So, after the repair today, I find that it still only logs about 50% of the actual miles. So what does it need now? Is it out of calibration somehow? Is the cable going bad? The speedo itself is very accurate, so I don't know what to think. I am not well versed on the Benz, so what do you all think? What's going on here?
Does anyone know the proper gears for the 85 300sd odo? (Meaning the teeth count).

I have an 85 SD as well with the gauge cluster on the bench waiting for ODO gears to come in. I ordered the whole set from here Odometer Gears | 72 Croatan Road | Newport News, VA 23606 | 757.593.3478 I have read others that have used him as well and have commented on how helpful he is. It may be worth a call to this guy to help you out as he has more experience with these repairs. Also, did you change all three gears? On mine I ordered all three gears because two of them were suspect at best.
Also, just for the record my ODO used the 12 tooth inner E3 gear. Don't know if they are all the same though.
Since 300SDs are by definition not Euros that leaves out the problem with Euro differentials and US speedos. If the speedo is accurate then the cable and hall effect sensor in the gearbox is just fine. So besides the plastic gears that leaves the impulse motor that drives the odometer. Replace the electrolytic capacitors - then see what it does.
The problem is now fixed and was actually pretty simple upon re-inspection by the shop. Turns out that a gear was not made correctly, the hole in it was not centered, and therefor the teeth were only engaging literally on one side of the gear. So the shop replaced it and it works great. So problem solved. I could not be happier with the shop and would highly recommend them to anyone in the LA area who needs gauge work. Not sure if it is cool to post their site or not, but here it is:
