1986 300SE Euro A/C question

I own a 1986 300SE Euro and I just had my refrigerant changed from R12 to R134a. After switching it, the mechanic said that my compressor was overheating the fuse and that I would need to replace the comprssor otherwise it would just blow a fuse again.

Is this normal?

If so, any recomendations on compressor replacements that would fit my model?

Thanks to each of you for any advice you have.

Tell your mechanic he's clueless about compressors. Assuming the compressor is overloading the fuse (extremely unlikely) then you replace only the clutch coil, since ONLY the clutch coil is electric! Also tell him nothing in a conversion has any affect on the clutch coil so what really is up??. If the fuse being blown runs the fan that's a DIFFERENT problem!

Is that something I can do? I have never heard a clutch coil. I was planning on purchasing a replacement compressor and doing it myself.

If you swapped to R134a then several things should have been replaced. I always thought the whole compressor but if the oil only can be done, so be it. I think the receiver/dryer gets replaced, vacuum drawn, the right oil put in, then R134a. Usually they black out the sight glass too. My 86 euro 300SEL has R134a (not my choice, got it that way) and it runs just fine.
