Smog/Air pump clanking

I've read where it has been recommended to "cut the belt", but I don't see how that is possible:



I don't need it, and I'd rather not spend $300 if it isn't necessary....so how do I remove it and use the same (or order a different?) belt?

The V8's have separate belts, but the inline 6 just has the one serpentine belt. I wonder if you can just unplug the electrical connection for the air pump and still leave the regular belt on there. Or remove it and get the euro belt - my euro 300 has no air pump and hence a shorter belt.

Thanks for the reply Mark....I hadn't realized the difference re: V8 vs. V6

I don't believe unplugging would have any affect, as it does it all the time...large "clunking" noises as the pump turns while the engine is at temp...not just when cold.
