Engine won't rev
My 1986 500 SEl (120k original miles on clock) wont rev out past 4500 rpm if I leave it in drive and wont go past 5200 rpm if held in gear.
My Merc service centre has tuned it and have stated that she seems to be starving for fuel. The adjusted tranny cable, replaced a couple of OC leads and replaced plugs but have said they suspect a tired EZL module advancing the timing quick enough to cope with WOT.
I contacted a online Merc parts dealer in OZ and he informed me they are about $4,500.00 !!!!
My question is has anyone retrofitted an after market electric ignition and or MOTEC engine management system or similar with good results?
I'm not paying that sort of money on a suspect EZL.
My dealer said wait awhile until they get a similar car in and they can swap it out to try then they could get a second hand unit.
However if anyone has had great success with aftermarket engine management and ignition I may consider that option

Do you know anyone with a Gen II v8? You can swap out their EZL, it will Work, perhaps not to 100% efficiency but if your's is bad it's would be an easy test.

"Tired" EZL module? Doesn't sound very scientific!
Get another opinion. I think they want to sell you some EZL model they have rotting on the shelf.
Also, replacing plugs will do nothing to solve the problem.

Yeah I could get a Gen II VB electrics very easily in Australia, maybe I should just change all the engines electronics?

Not sure if this would affect our cars the same way, but once had a 96 240sx se that had been bought to resell and it wouldn't rev over 3000rpm, Turned out the wire to the airflow meter had been cut, Maybe replacing/checking yours will fix it as well?
If your engine is low on power, it will be the fuel pump. depandant on model it may have 2 fitted. First thing though is the filters, there are 2 of them also. one at the rear next to the pump, and another very small one on the fuel distribution unit, on the induction manifold. The filter is located inside the fuel feed union. I run a fleet of these cars and replace these items on a regular basis.
there is no electronic Air Flow Meter on these cars. it is a mechanical system.
incidentaly: I have never had to replace an ignition unit, it would normally cause a) non starting b) hesitation under load, not low power.
