Pretty much length, although whether the se's came with reclining rear seats I dont know.

Not only did SE's not come with reclining rear seats, which saves a little weight by not having the added rails and motors but, all non-reclining rear seats I've come across have had backrest frames made of aluminium instead of steel used for reclining seats
The weight difference is quite noticable, I know, I have one of each in my garage
I just looked up the tech specs in the sales brochure for my '85 500SEL, it states it has an extra 35kg (77lb) over the 500SE, not as much as I expected but, that's still a good saving nonetheless

I had a 300sd(same length as se) and a 500sel ------keep the longer wheel base---it is better for your rear passengers and space in general---i found i liked the extra room back in high school!!!!
What are the major differences between an SE and the SEL? I know that the later is much longer but is there any other differentiations?
I have also heard that the SE has slightly better handling due to shorter wheelbase. I have never driven one (SE) so I can't say for sure. Perhaps some of the owners can testify to that.

I can confirm that the SE had much better handling. There much more sliding with an sel than an SE. I had own both for an extended period of time. I believe the SE handles better than and SEC for my style of driving.

Did you mean SEL or SEC? I would think the SEC handles better than the SE.

SEC....I can confirm the SE handles better than an SEC. That's why I have completely given up on MERC SL, SEC and MERC 'SPORTS' COUPE.
I'll owned an 380SEC, 500SEC, 500SEL(my dad's last car), 280 SE, 300 SE, 300SEL, 380 SE, driven a 560SEL(for a two weeks but never owned it).
SURPRISES there is more body flex in an SEC than an SE NO JOKE. SEL handles worse as the extra length makes it the most tail happy of the lot. But I like it and now enjoy the drive. If i am not wrong the SEL has less body flex than an SEC. But I only managed to do a one on one with an SE and SEC. But remember the SEC to flex most of the lot but overall handling is better than SEL due to fish tailing
I would imagine the SEC flex problem has a lot to do with the fact there's no B pillar. The SE (and SEL) have the added advantage of B pillar support don't you think? I'm still a bit surprised though because one would think a coupe would generally handle better! Interesting!
