Hello forum,
Just wanted to ask how do you tell if your cams need replacing. I have mechanic who says mine are to flat and they should be more rounded like a cone. How much is reasonable price?
whaaat!?! i never knew this.. probably won't pass emissions with any kind of overlap over stock, though.. got links to distributors of these bumpsticks?
Hey jonathan are the camshafts suppose to be more cone shaped at the tips, mine seem to be more flat. Could you explain how it should look like. Thanks
this cone shape is called the "lobe". the lobe can wear down from insufficient lubrication to the valvetrain. i can't imagine the factory camshaft wearing down like that. if you had pics of it, i'm sure we could diagnose it better.
I had a mechanic tell me that my camshafts were the cause of my 380sec running rough and "misfiring", he claimed it had nothing to do with my plugs and wires and I could change all kinds of parts but if I didn't replace those it would still run the same. I never had him do the work, he also told me $1000 to fix my heating issues when it was only the monovalve (simple, low cost repair), so I don't plan on going back to him anymore either.
well, i've seen n00bs ruin a new cam by improperly torquing the bearings or not using an engine assembly lube (or equivalent) during initial startup, but i've never seen flat spots. when a scandelous "mechanic" sees a merc pull up, they have dollar signs in thier eyes.
