For what it's worth, here's a mention from the NY Times re: 1988 prices. There was a similar price-increase story on the 1987 model year, but with no prices cited.

LEAD: Mercedes-Benz of North America said it plans to raise prices on its 1988 models between 2.6 percent and 3.4 percent. The lowest-priced model, the 190-E sedan with five-speed manual transmission, will sell for $29,190, and the highest-priced car, the 560-SEC coupe with automatic transmission, will sell for $76,380 on the West Coast and $75,850 on the East Coast.
Why did you have to pay a $500 premium if you lived on the West Coast?
Thanks for the info. I figured it was in the low $70K range. This 87 is my new baby and it rides like a very expensive motorcar, having driven 123's, 124's and 201's all my life I feel the diifference. Geez and I thought my 400E was expensive when I bought it at $58K in 1992. Thanks again...
that's still cheap i reckon, in those days $215k got you a nice family home in Sydney, right now the new S classes are about $350k plus (just a guess) that can get you a one bedroom shoe box apartment!
If you assume 5%pa inflation then the equivalent cost of the 560 today is $545063.
They ain`t selling new for that anymore so I wonder what has given? Materials quality or profit? Both probably.
Would $545063 get you a reasonable home in Sydney today?
