I have been following some of the threads over on the 500E500 site about intake manifold polishing and porting. What do you all think about doing this to our m117 manifolds? I have one sitting in my garage that will be out for a while and I was thinking about having at it. My plan is to disassemble and clean, then sand and polish out any irregularities and make the passages smooth. Is there anything that I should have in mind while doing this? Any big no-no's? Also what about matching the intake ports on the heads w/ the intake manifold ports? Good idea....waste of time?

Very good idea with any car, im P&P the heads off my new sec at the moment. If it wasnt so labour intensive all cars would have it done from factory. Although our heads an manifolds are better off in terms of finish then most.
Heres a link to a site for standard abrasives who offer a complete kit and very in depth instructions. http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.shtm

Very nice reference
I am on the 500E500 board and got an extra set of exhaust and intake manifolds the last time I was at Potomac German. Like I need another project.
Im planning to P&P my 119 once ive finished with my sec, that engine will respond well to a good porting, as even the newer merc V8s have stupid intake manifolds.
wow something not right there, my old euro 9:1 was making 220rwhp nothing but that modified air intake and a manifold back exhaust. The extra 20kw the 10:1 has over the 9:1 equals about 25 odd HP. If mine was making 220 and that 10:1 <240 I think that dyno was broken.
Wish I could say the 117 I came across w/ ported/polished intake worked better but alas it did not..
Euro engine, 10-1 pistons, tube headers, P&P intake, proper exhaust, MSD etc, etc, etc.. less then 240 @ the rear wheels...

What size were the headers and the pipes after the headers? Did it have close to a stock exhaust system or wide open from the headers back to a muffler?
Also, what should that motor "stock" on the Rear Wheels at the dyno?
Better fuel management, real electronic fuel injection, and some decent cams would go a long way to better horsepower. Look at the M119 in various flavors,. lots of HP there.

As a baseline, my stone stock US version M117 '87 560SEC measured 194 rwhp, which calculated out to 235 crank HP.
The only "modification" on the engine was a powder-coated intake manifold, which I did for looks when I had a chance. Nothing done to polish or port it, just to pretty it up, which was then almost completely covered up by the air cleaner. Darn.
