While driving it last night the oil pressure suddenly dropped the temperature shot up and then blap blap blap bammmm! Blew a rod right out of the bottom of the block. I know have a golf ball size hole in the block.
My husband is really good about watching the gauges and making sure the car has oil pressure. We change the oil every 3 months.
How much to fix? The body and interior are in good shape, air/door/windows all work.
If $$$ is a concern best you could hope for was a good used engine, but finding that is difficult. To fix this properly will cost more then the car is worth (unless it is in first rate/beautiful condition).
I think your best bet would be to shop around for a good parts car, i.e. one that was well-maintained but rusted out. If you spend $1000 on it and have it installed for $300 (just making those numbers up, could be more or less on either end depending on a lot of things) you will be in good shape. That is, if you want to keep this car at all; you may want to just find a new one.

Jonathan is right. The engine on my SD was swapped out a few years before i bought it and at that time the labor was $1500. Not sure why the guy spent $5K on a car worth about half.

I'm sure you would, Jonathan, and I'm sure you would do an excellent, thorough job as well. I was just figuring the labor cost to swap the blocks between two cars, no hooking up of any accessories or controls, etc, just pull one and plug it into another - assuming the rest could be done at home to save some money.
If that's the route you are looking for I'd get yourself an engine crane (Harbour freight has them for about 100$) and do the job yourself. I'd also recommend you power wash the engine rooms down before starting..it will make your life Much nicer.

Sorry for your loss "jelly450". I've been gathering spares for my 83' 300SD from the local paper and Pick n Pull. I pulled an engine yesterday from the wrecking yard that I couldn't resist. IP looked like new, Bosch reman starter and alternator, even the valve cover was clean aluminum and had a nice clean label on the front illustrating how to adjust the valves. The front of the block also had a genuine Mercedes tag on it that I haven't seen before. Took me about four hours using their hoist to get it into the borrowed truck. Total with tax= $170.00!
