Having an issue with the climate control. I was turning the temperature dial the other day and the system completely went dead - the blowers would not come on.
The obvious thing I checked first were the fuses and they appeared to be ok. Could this be a blower relay problem? If so, do I just replace them or is there a simple check? I looked at the MB sevice CD on Climate Control and it really seems complicated. I just want to eliminate the most common problems first before tearing into the system in search of possible problems. It seems weird that the system would just go completely dead just by turning the temperature dial.
I do sense the vents getting cold when the AC is activated and I do get a very small amount of heat from the vents once the car is moving but the blowers don't work. Any suggestions on what to look for next would be greatly appreciated as the weather is getting colder here in Michigan.
One more thing - if it isn't obviously blown in two, don't just look at the strip, poke it gently with your finger. A couple of folks have found it cracked in two and intermittently making contact.
Also, make sure the ignition switch returns to the " run " position completely after you release the key from the " start " position. If the notches for " run " are misaligned, the contacts are not closed and the blower does not get power. This is pretty common on mid-80's 126 chassis. I thought it might be worth mentioning.
Mike:
Had a chance to check the fuse you suggested and it was definetely bad, split in half! I didnt have any luck finding one at AutoZone so I just used a some solder and it works fine now until I am able to locate a fuse.
Thanks again for your help. I didnt even know this fuselink existed outside the fusebox.

Like all the Benz fuses, you have to get it at a dealer (well..the ceramic ones you can also get at VW dealers). BTW, I don't know about that whole soldering thing, I mean, if there is some good reason for the fuse to have blown, it is now a fire hazard.
I had the car seat on by accident which contributed to overpowering the system when I turned on the air. I'm pretty sure that's what caused the fuse to blow. I didnt immediately know how to turn off the heated seat since I have never used it before and the switch was covered over by the open ashtray! I feel real stupid now but after looking at the manual I figured it out. Unfortunately it was already too late and the fuse was toast.
Realy silly to have to turn on the air in order to counter the heated seat, but when youre tooling on the highway at 80mph its not exactly convenient to look at a manual that's behind the rear seat! I should probably get to know my car better...
