Beside some good stands, a creeper comes in handy.

I just recently changed out my fuel filter and pump on my '83 380SEL and I didn't even jack the car up. It was a little awkward at times but there was plenty of room under the rear of the vehicle for me to do this whiloe the vehicle was resting on all fours.

As long as you don't plan on droppign the gas tank Jack stands will give you more then enough room!
