Fantastic mileage equivalent to 115 voyages around the world
The astonishing high mileage clocked up by this “kilometer world champion serves to underline in impressive manner the legendary longevity of Mercedes-Benz vehicles which as taxis have become a familiar feature of towns and cities – not only in Germany, where every second taxi is a Mercedes-Benz, but also elsewhere throughout the world.
Having bought his 240 D in Germany in 1981 with 220,000 km on the clock, Mr. Sachinidis returned to Thessaloniki, where the car went into round-the-clock service as a taxi until July 2004. In addition to the original engine, Mr. Sachinidis also had access to two replacement units which he used on a rotational basis a total of 11 times. The 4.6-million-kilometer mileage is equivalent to going around the world 115 times or six trips to the moon and back. Mr. Sachinidis had written to Prof. JĂĽrgen Hubbert, Member of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG with responsibility for the Mercedes Car Group, to thank him for the continuous good service he had received. When representatives of the Mercedes-Benz Museum Collection paid him a visit, Mr. Sachinidis agreed to present his vehicle to the Mercedes-Benz Museum.
Bringing the presentation event held at the Mercedes-Benz Museum to a close, the President of DaimlerChrysler Hellas, Dr. Alexander Paufler, presented Mr. Sachinidis with the key to a new C 200 CDI which he will to take possession of on his return to Greece.
