The upshot is that I feel absolutely no "new-Benz Envy" looking at the post-W140 designs. This makes me enjoy and appreciate my W-126 (for all its INNUMERABLE PAIN-IN-THE-ASS WALLET-THINNING FAULTS) more.

yeah, my 560SEL is in the shop right now with a leaking transmission, but looking at these pics i felt a renewed sense of pride in it, anyway...
to me, the rear end of this new benz looks like an oversized hyundai elantra... on the bright side, benzes have a history of evolving nicely during their production run, and i'm sure it'll look much nicer after its midcycle freshening, in, oh 2011 or so.
Funny stuff. Very interesting... I (a W140 owner), read you W126 comments on the new S-Class, the then W220 comments on the same car. http://benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1196316&posts=4&fid=19#M1378617 The two sets of comments are on 2 totally opposites ends of the spectrum.

that really is interesting... to each his/her own.
As for me, it looks cheap, and there is something inherently dissatisfying about the contour where the hood meets the front windshield and also the fenders (or lack there of - as if they were sliced off with a cheese cutter - yes, it stinks).
To use an SLR camera analogy, W126 to me is like a vintage Leica Camera - solid, elegant, and understated. The newer S class cars are like cheap plastic bodied cameras with big blobular handgrips that are indistinguishable from one manufacturer's model to another.
yes, w126 owners think very similar. w126 drivers strongly stand by the w126 as one of the last chassis that posessed class, quality engineering and lasting elegance found through a classic design that is hard to forget. now an these days which is now 2005, cars are design to revolve around other car makers desings and appeal. if you want class and elegance now, expect to pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for a bentley or rolls royce. mercedes was once in the league of bentley and rolls royce, now the company has shifted roads unfortunately.

Can't argue with that! [:)]
