ok guys i was donated a 1981 300 sd turbo awsome car. the only problem is that it has not been started in 2 years the owner got a new benz. he says that there is nothing wrong with it. my question is what type of maintence should i do on it to get it back on the road. i know that i need to change the oil but what else also do you think the pistons need to be replaced since it had not been moved in 2 years also what about the gas do i need to sipon it out or drop the tank and clean out that old diesel gas i'm a newbie here so any info would be helpful thank you[?]
One would hope a little oil was put in the chambers before it sat for two years.[:0] Yes, take the old fuel out of the tank and use algaecide, there may be quite a bloom in there. Replace the screen tank filter, the pre-filter and main filter. Run purge through the injector pump and injectors – do a search for the procedure – and change the oil with an API CH-4 rated diesel oil, I use Delo 400 15w 40. Make sure the battery’s got a good charge and give it a try.
thanks for the advice not sure how to do the purge i'll look and see if anyone has done this on the algaecide what is this and where can i get it from thank you
Well, the IP/injector purge is basically a large jar of purge (which is a cleaner) with the fuel line in the jar like a straw - no filters in between - and running that pure purge sans diesel through the system for a few seconds – that’s all it takes and that way you know the pump and injectors are clean.
