Steering wheel noise

Ive got a problem, whenever i turn the steering wheel it makes a "creeeeking" noise. I usually only notice it when i am at slow speeds and turning. I dont notice it when i am on the highway, but then agian i usually have my stereo cranked up. HOw can i fix this???

On a serious note, check your power steering fluid level. It shoould only make noise at maximum turn.

ok ill check the fluid cause it makes the noise every times when i turn the steering wheel i little bit.

i checked the ps oil and it was full ( about 1 inch tell the top). Any other suggestions

It will be noisy if the filter is clogged – it may need to be changed.

I'm not sure whether "your" noise come from the interior of from the outside. Outside noises usually has to do with the powersteering.

BUT - the 126 often develop a grinding/creaking noise from inside the steering rack. It's only audible at low speeds - AND [:(!] very annoying when you are crusing along winding country roads.

This noise is caused by the brass contact rings for the horn. They are either broken or need lubricant. Mind you: The rings should not be oiled or lubricated if you have an airbag in the steering wheel. In that case only replacement of the rings (or entire wheel?) will do. For "normal" wheels you can use "Electrolube" on the rings.

In either case you have to remove the wheel to rectify this. Don't pour or spray lubricant down the rack - that will only trigger some electrical failure. If you have an air-bag there are special procedures to be observed before you can remove the wheel, and you need a long "torx-key" to get the airbag out.

Have a look at the steering stabilizer, the shock absorber looking thing on the linkages under the oil pan. I had one that creaked and groaned for months till I figured out it was the culprit.

YOu can hear the noise from the inside of my car as well as the outside, it almost sounds like the noise is coming from the passenger seat glove compartment

In that case it is definitely not the contact rings I mentioned, they can only be heard from the inside. Powersteering noises you should be able to pinpoint to the pump/steering mechanisms on the left hand side of the engine bay (on an LHD car that is). If it seems to come from where you say that could indicate any of the moving linkages in the steering - the steering damper mentioned in another posting sounds like a good tip. If that's not it, I would have this checked by a mechanic soon - the moving parts of the steering and/or suspension is not supposed to make creaking noises.
