RE: Steering wheel noise

It's most likely idler arm bushings or your steering damper, but other joints can
squeak as well...you could try using a stethoscope, whilst another moves the wheel
to reproduce your noise.

Re p/s fluid:

1. No it cannot be argued, at least intelligently, that the fluid shouldn't be changed...that is bad advice

2. MB fluid is obviously OK to use, Castrol ATF (Dexron III) is also OK (and won't cause any leaks or problems)

RE: Steering wheel noise

my guess would be the guide rod mount. mine is bad and in need of replacement. when the mount goes bad the whole wheel can move back and forth

I’m sorry, langpfeife, that’s not correct – do not use modern ATF, it will foul the system. Although true that ATF was used back in the 80’s (Type A), modern ATF will damage the system. Use MB p/s fluid or a p/s specific fluid.

…now back to the steering noise problem…

Do you have a credible link which proves the specific fluid I mentioned has been linked to MB p/s problems?
What exactly do you mean by "fouling the system"? Regardless, I've been using it in all of my Benzes for YEARS, and have never experienced any p/s related problems, not even a leaky hose.

Indeed.
