improving 280E engine performance??

I have a question on one of the early 1980 280E Mercedes engines. This particular engine has a displacement of 2746cc, 86,0mm bore, and the stroke is 78,8mm. The compression ratio is 8:1, and its rated output is 115 kW at 5250rpm. I would like to know if the compression ratio can be increased, say to between 9 -10:1. If so how can the higher compression ratio be achieved and will it increase he performance output ( kW ) and will it improve the fuel consumption?

Thank in advance
