I wanted to run my gas tank dry & when the needle was between the quarter & zero mark, the needle went to the empty position(all the way to the left).
When restarting the car the needle remained in the empty position. Upon filling the tank & driving off, the neelde remained in the empty position for some distance, then went to the full position.
Any advice on what the cause is & what should be done to correct this.
Running your gas tank dry is never a good idea as over the years all sorts of muck would have gathered on the bottom off your tank (off the fuel filler nozzle etc.).
It could simply have been some of this dirt had "clogged or jammed" the gauge float mechanism in your tank.
I would expect things to settle down and would be suprised if you saw this again ... unless of course you let the tank almost empty out again.
Thanks blazer!
Sorry if I confused you. I did not drain the fuel, I ran the vehicle to reduce the fuel level in the tank.
What would you advise to clean the muck in the tank & fuel sender unit. Where is the fuel sender unit located & how should I service it.
When fuel tanks I STRONGLY suggest getting a recommendation from your local MB agent and having a qualified person do the job for you in a safe workshop.
I say this thinking of a friend of my father's, who was a very good mechanic, but, had a tank explode on him ... he suffered horrendous burns.
I dont wish to scare you, but wouldnt like to hear of that happening to anyone again. It did not affect his quality of life though (he still did everything and remains a "controlled lunatic") ... and he is still a damned good mechanic.
