Fixing fast idle with throttle switch - what are the implications?

Like many others I am suffering with the 1200rpm idle. While I am trying to trace all possible sources (idle valve already replaced), I was advised to disconnect the throttle switch (near distributor) & bridge 2 pins. This is allowing the idle to be at much nearer the correct speed.

Does anyone know what the reason for this is, & is it a reasonable long term fix (could the switch be the problem?) I am also noticing that with the switch mod that the engine experiences frequent power losses, as if the petrol was shut off for a second or so. Is this yet another fault in the mix?

Sorry for the complexity

Steve
