.. Just happened.. when I open one of my rear doors,it creaks badly - sort of like something plasticky has cracked or broken. It is not hinges that need lube, but kinda sounds the same.Is this a sign of a failed check strap?
Found an ebay seller offering a pair for US$29.99 is this reasonable?
Thanks guys,
Dennis S.

Well if you eliminate the hinges as a source, it would almost have to be the door check. The price you mentioned sounds OK. The 126 door check is a nickel-dime item (U.S. expression = very inexpensive).
I'm glad someone is asking about this, since I recently replaced a check strap, and I can now share my knowledge. If it creaks, it probably is the checkstrap. Does your door stay open by itself on a slope? You can read about my checkstrap replacement in the topic named "Door Panel Removal" (I think). I bought a brandnew checkstrap right from a dealership for $22.00. You can find them in the performance parts catalogue for just $13.00 I think.
