What is it?

I have a '83 280 SE Euro (with the beaut 110 motor). I'm curious what the little gizmo is that is located near the front internal courtesy light fitting (near the rear vision mirror). It looks like a little microphone grill or something, about the size of a 10 cent piece. Can anyone enlighten me?

Re: What is it?

Aussie, I have a '83 500SE Euro and mine has exactly what you are describing. I believe it is for the dual zone climate control. It samples the air temperature and adjusts the temperature in either driver's or passanger's zone.

Re: What is it? - My guess...

I have an '88 560sel and a gray market '83 380se and they both have it. I have ready that the stereo (on the 560 anyway) had an automatic volume control that would adjust the volume to the noise level in the car. To do that, it would have to use a mic (unless its assume RPMs = Noise and takes it off the tach).

Re: What is it?

What you see as a small grill nearby the interiour light is the duct for the temperature control 'snuffler'<br>
The air is sucket into a small pipe at this position, the carried through a small pipe into a small ventilator (which actually sucks the air into the grill) and then to a temparature feeler. The small ventilator is located behind the glove box and can be seen after getting the glove box inlet out.<br>
The feeler also sits somewhere there.<br>
Then you have a control device (black box - size of pack of cigarettes) somwhere in the dash, which controls the duo-valve in front of your screen. It triggers the valves in conjunction what you have set on your heater regulators and what the temp. feeler tells the black box.<br>
The balck box trys to get the interiour temparature to the level set on the temperature wheels.<br>
The duo-valve of the heating system can be heard making 'nagg-nagg' sounds when you have the engine running and the temp.wheels are set to some decent temperature.<br>
<br>
The temp.feeler then tells the black box, when its warm enough.<br>
<br>
I hope I shed some light on it...<br>
<br>

<br>
PS. The automatic volume control of radios takes the signal from the speedo. It should have a small black box in the back of the speedo housing, a so called 'hall-signal-trigger', which provides the signal which is used by the tempomat as well as the radio and everything else controled by the actual speed.

Re: What is it?

I'm stunned! You amaze me with your knowledge of this marque. I've always said the aircon in this car was the best I've ever experienced, and I've driven a lot of different cars in the company I work for. Here is Australia, you really appreciate a good aircon system!<br>

Re: What is it?

Hi,<br>
well, I am interested in my car, cause of lack of finance to go for the dealer every time...:-)<br>
<br>
And I got hold of two compact discs which indlude the whole W126 repair manual. Theses CDs are sold in the US due to governmental orders, that the repair manuals for all vehicles brought into the US market have to be open for everybody, espcially non-franchise dealers and workshops (free garages)<br>
<br>
As I understood you are in Australia? My sister in law lives in Sydney and we plan to vivit her later this year. I could try to bring two copys to Australia and send them to you.<br>
If they do not lock me away for copying CDs....<br>
<br>
Otherwise you could try to get a pair of them via ebay.com. They are regularly sold there.<br>
It is a good help to understand and repair your pride and joy! It includes all step by step procedures including a whole lot of pictures.<br>
<br>
try and get them.<br>
<br>
regards<br>
heppsen

Re: What is it?

The little grille is a thermostat for the a/c. My '85 SEL has one also. Earlier w126 models had these in the middle of the dash near the front wind screen.<br> <br> I had an '83 280SE years ago and loved it but I longed for an SEL.
