Bought this 420SEL off of Craig's List; I haven't taken photos yet, but here are two of the seller's photo's... $4,700 with 61k miles from the original owner. I have ordered new wheels and tires, along with a new grille assembly and headlight surrounds due to a few small dings from stones.

Nice. I own a 1987 as well. Are you certain that is a 1987? I thought they all had silver on the lower body panel. Wasn't it 1989 when they changed to all body-colored?

No.
The lower boddy cladding was a different color, in many cases gray, from 1986-1991 for the 2nd generation W126ers.
Some people enjoyed painting the bumpers, lower cladding, mirror backs and door handles body color for a nice monochromatic look. My car has that

It is a 1987 model, built in July of 1986. No cladding, maybe due to the early production run. I thought that maybe there was no cladding due to being a 420SEL and not a 560SEL; can someone tell me model-wise cladding vs. no cladding?

The way I have been keeping track of orginal paint is through the pin stripe on the car. design and location specifically. I can tell the difference between the original and the added one after a repaint. I know some were removed due to waxing, etc.
Did all of these cars come with a pin stripe?

No they didn't.
But they were a Mercedes Benz "dealer installed" option if you wanted it at the time the cars were sold new.

oh ok, cool cascade, thanks! besides color differentiation and differences in paint texture under the hood corners, paint depth, painted mirrors, painted door handles, etc. how can you tell if a car has been repainted
