The pics of the engine compartment show what looks like a GM charcoal cannister, which is perfectly fine to collect gas fumes.

yes, it had a GM canister and a ford sir pump to the BMW catalytic converters under the car---it looks like to keep it carb legal in NorCal when it came into the country, they did this---- as for the cats and the canister, it looks newer than 1983 when it came into the country--this car rolled off the line 3 days before Christmas in Germany in 1982 (dec 23rd)
