With the recent 100+ degree days, my rearview mirror finally gave up the ghost. Oh well, it lasted just over 404,000 miles, so I can't complain. Picked up a new one at the dealership and with a little pre-coaching from Jonathan, I installed it in the parking lot in about 3 minutes.
There is always a fear of the unknown and the same holds true for repairs - no matter how simple they may be. So, I figured that I would post this up for anyone that might need this information at some point in the future or for anyone that might be interested.
To remove the existing mirror, just grab the arm of the mirror and yank it towards you at a downward angle (I would say that I pulled towards 8 o'clock). That's right, just give her a good, quick yank. You will understand in a minute.
It was explained to me that they were designed to break free in the event of an accident. If your head hits it, it will break free and cause minimal trauma (brilliant). It is held in place by two VERY strong spring pins that lock into a metal channel on each side of the recepticle in the roof. To install the new mirror, I just put the passenger side pin inside its recepticle, and rested the driver's side pin against its metal recepticle. I couldn't force, punch, or wiggle the second pin into position because the pin springs are just too strong. I ended up using a pair of needle nose pliers to depress the driver's side pin while pushing up on the mirror (remember, the passenger side was already in position). With a little effort, the mirror slid up into position and securely clicked letting me know that it was seated.
Wiped the fingerprints off the glass and I was happily on my way.
I hope that this might help someone out - or at least I hope someone finds it interesting.
wow great timing, how did you install this in 3 minutes? i hear its very stressful to try and remove and install this back into place, can you tell me the details please?
I love Brandon, and love to help him (the Guam Lone Ranger), but he sometimes skips the text. Sorry Brandon... I'm sure you can figure it out by re-reading the first post carefully.
haha yes "the Guam Lone Ranger" theres not too many Mercedes fanatic's on Guam, the only ones that are here, are mostly aged people, no young kids, or middle aged individuals, an example would be the junk yard i told the guy to get the amp behind the rear seats you need to lift it up, he didnt do it properly and tore a rather good condition upholstery, but sorry for missing that text, i was in a rush, i should slow down before i hit myself in the head while replacing this too. thanks CAP.
