1991 Mercedes Benz 560 SEL Engine R/R + More!
Well here it is July 2nd 2006 and we have finished our project Benz two weeks early!
I have attached photos, keep in mind we been fiddling around with this car for almost a half year with most all of the work being done in the past two months. Some of the work includes
* R/R Engine and Transmission
* R/R Hydro Suspension shocks
* R/R Front Clip
* R/R Interior (Mushroom/Brazil two tone) Very orginal and very cool
* Free flowing exhaust
* R-134a Retrofit
* And a fresh power wash this morning.
Have a look at the photos. This car runs AWSOME. Fast as hell also. Notice more power and a cooler running engine with the custom exhaust I built (Pillaged it from the 420). Nice and cool in the cabin.
I cant wait to do the next one. Definatly going to be another 560. Hope to pick up3 more Mercedes before December. One to rebuild, One for parts, And one beater for our 100lb Nitrous Oxide test bed.
This one has 130,000 miles on her. I have been all thru it and its leaking nothing and EVERYTHING works. I dont even feel like finsihing this thread as I want to go take a shower and drive!!

After a long 200 mile run in trip I must admit I still think a few more things need to be ironed out. Some of these things include-
* New Genuine MB Rear Springs (They seem a little weak and I belive my hydro system is being worked too hard. New would be nice but I have a nice pair that are standing tall on a 420 that I think I am going to use.
* Cruise control. I almost forgot that I had no cruise control module/amp or actuator. The vehicle this engine come out of had ASR and you would not belive the amount of diffrent parts used in this system. The ASR option was only $2000 from the factory however it seems there are WAY more than $2000 worth of parts to make this system. Some things that are diffrent between ASR vehicles and Non-Asr Vehicles is (1) Cruise Control AMP (2) ABS Computer (3) Addition of ASR Pump next to ABS pump (4) Accumulator down behind the drivers fender (5) An electric pump plumbed into the brake resivor (5) Cruise Control Actuator (6) Addition of an Electromagnetic throttle armature (7) Dual sensor rear differential. Other than all of that most all of the other parts are cross compatable with non-asr vehicles.
* Tinted Windows (Hate to see my leather fade).
* New front shocks. Not becuase they are bad, but they dont have the same feel as the Mercedes OE shocks. (Some jack ass put Monroe Sensatracs on there!)
* Rims, maybe 18-20 inch. But not anytime soon I can assure you as I have more important things going on, however should anyone reading this want to swap some parts for a nice set of rims give me a call at (734)459-0007 with any offerings.
* More time to enjoy it. (Dont see this being anytime soon)
Other than that I am most happy with everything. I did notice that in a 30 minute traffic jam at 90F on the highway my temprature sat at about 95-100 degrees cel. but went right back down to 85-95 when moving. I did have the AC on so I could not hear the auxilary fans working at the time but I did visually verify they were working before the trip so I wasnt worried. All is well that ends well I guess. My kids made a big mess in the back seat looks like they were throwing freetos around and now the back seat looks like a toy chest.
Getting ready for the 4th of July over here in the USA. Blew some coin on some good fireworks. Really I just wanted to drive the Benz or I would have purchased them down the street instead of driving 200 miles to some shack that if caught on fire would blow a massive hole in the earth. I did not see even 1 w126 Mercedes the entire trip, and everyone always has to do a doubble take when the boat floats by. Now to me not seeing another vehicle like your own on a 200 mile trip is the kind or originality I am looking for.
Next stop- Colorado Springs Colorado. I am curious to see if my altitude correction capsule is going to cut the mustard while up in the mountans.
I honestly thought I would have more people giving me the ole "Good Job" and a suggestion. I guess since I make this my business its just expected and that I dont get the same pat on the back as the rookies! Oh well, I am going to get in my benz and have her pat me on the back all the way to the store Thanks for reading.

I dunno I guess everyone just sees a 117 to 117 replacement, kinda been done by jonothan but he really gave his engine an overhaul as well as adding the go fast bits. I do however admire your enthusiasm towards more work, after that 119 conversion i did mines running pretty low the cars just been sitting in the garage since I finished it nearly a month ago, I havent even started it.

Rear springs for an SLS equipped car are softer than sprigns designed to work with conventional struts.
So long as the rear is sitting half-an-inch lower than the front and the SLS height control valve is in the nuetral position (i.e. at this point the small hole in the height control valve lever should be lined up with the small hole on the body of the control valve - this is the neutral position), then the set-up is fine. This position is achieved by adjusting the length of the connecting rod that links the height valve lever to the roll bar bracket.
You can also play with the spring pads to gain height. MB do 3 levels of spring pads for the w126 and they differ by 5mm - however, a 5mm difference in the spring pad equates to a 9mm difference in the vehicle height, according to the MB documentation.
you mention there are differences of hp and temp with the new exhaust system you will install. They look similar but it's visible they aren't exactly the same.
so what's actually different about them? thanks and good work

Good job, I'm sure you will enjoy this car for years to come. However you mentioned the climbing temp in standstill/slow moving traffic, I feel that there is a design flaw in the sense that if I start my car with the A/C on with outside temperature of 133 - 127F but with the hood up it would never cross the 90 mark on the gauge, but the moment you slam the hood shut you could see the needle start climbing to 100 and beyond and a drop in the cooling of the A/c.
The area around the distributor is the worst, I am thinkink of having some ventilation louvres installed in the hood ( 540 K ).
I did remove the hood and drove around at night with temp of 100 outside and the needle never crossed the 80 mark even when car was at standstill for 45 minutes.
Any thoughts on the louvres and design ??
Awesome job on the Benz! Looks really cool. I'm curious about the exhaust and the added 15hp. I'm going to need a new exhaust system soon and this looks interesting...
I'm inspired to get mine in order now! Just painted my grill this weekend and replaced the grill moulding. A pretty dramatic differance.
