Any thoughts on replacing burned-out instrument dash bulbs? Can only find info on speedometer dash replacement.
I took my 1991 420SEL to my garage to have the map light (only, not big interior light) and center cluster lights replaced (the lights for the temp wheel, air direction and fan adjuster buttons).
They said that the housing had melted and the entire cluster would have to be replaced, not just those lights. Big $!
What gives? Suspect the original owner used too powerful replacement bulbs...
Any way to diy or is this a major deal I should learn to live with?

Hi,
I think your problem could be a melted' octupus'. Mounted on the heater/air box behind the the wooden console for your climate control unit is a light terminal that has a bulb in the center and several small fiber optic wires that feed light to your console buttons . It looks like a octopus or a spider. If that has melted because somebody used a too high voltage bulb, You maybe be able to replace it without too much of a problem. You will have to hold your mouth right because
it is kinda in a tight spot.
Another thing, I beleive the lights for you temp wheel are independent of the spider. The Climate control units has 2 peanut lights on the face of it. Just went through changing mine a few weeks ago.
Best Wishes
