Does anyone know what the normal operating temperature range is for a 560 SEL? I realize it depends on the type of driving you do. I'm concerned about mostly city driving. My gauge reads between the 80c and the line before 120c when it was 87F. I'm assuming that's 100c. I always get a little nervous when it reaches the 100c mark but would like to see what everyone else averages. I live in Michigan where the outside temp flunctuates from low single digits in the winter and 90+F in the summer. The manual suggests normal engine temp can run up to just before the red line... but that would make me real nervous!
All my cars run b/w 80-87 depending on temp/traffic and the AC. highest I've seen was about 95 when it was 100 or so degrees out, stuck in traffic w/ the AC on full.
Thanks Jonathan. So I guess I'm close to normal or just slightly below normal compared to your 560. I had my AC going as well when mine gauge hit the 100c mark, but then again I didnt have 100 degree outside temp either (hi 80's). I guess I'll have to see what happens when it gets hotter. In short no need to worry yet... correct?
Eh...I don't really like to see them traveling up that high w/ regularity. When was the last time your cooling system was looked @/maintained? The coolant should be changed @ least every 2 years. How is your fan clutch? One morning before you start the car go out and see what kind of resistance you encounter when you spin the fan.. Then get the car up to temp and when you park check it again. It should be a good bit harder to move.
Also, you might try adding a container or two of Redline's Water Wetter.
Also check the aux. temp sensor to see if it is engaging the fans. There is a link for a resistor that will lower the cooling fans down from 105* to 95*. That made a difference in my 560.

Thanks again Jonathan. So you are saying that if the gauge reads between 80 and 120 (at around 100 I'm guessing) then that's NOT normal? I just bought the car a month or so and know the radiator was changed last year. I normally reads at 80c and only goes higher when the weather is in the upper 80's and above.

I'll give the Redline a try.
With a pressurized system, 120 C is not boiling and the engine is fine. I see 110 C fairly often when Las Vegas is 105F and I'm stopped in traffic. My engine temperature gauge, in C, makes a reasonable outside air temp gauge, in F, when the temperature gets above around 85. If it is 95F outside, the engine seems to run 95C, etc. No problems, nothing wrong, it's just the way it is.
