My conversation with a supplier made me feel that the conversion is mainly cosmetic and a little change in the beam pattern, but the new lights will not significantly increase the amout of light on the road. I am not interested in making the change purely for cosmetic reasons. The supplier told me he was testing a conversion that included the new xeon arc system used on new cars, and if he concludes they work reliably enough on older cars, he will offer them. Any opinions here?

Nope I beg to differ. I just pick up our Euro 560SEL on one of the foggiest days in Vancouver. And I can tell you that the fog lights on those Euro Lights are night and days when compare to the North American spec yellow fog light. The way they manage to penetrate thru the fog is unbelieveable. Furthermore, the Euro has a different pattern for the right lamp where it light up side and street signs that seal beam unit will not. Bottom line, it's more than just cosmetic, it's a safety upgrade as well.
you don't have 'more' light on the road, but the dispersion is much better. the DOT spec lights are designed like 2 spotlights pointing at the ground, whereas the euro lights are a trapezoid, throwing light to the right and left as well, but not into the eyes of oncoming cars.
further, several members already have xenon lights (myself included)
if you use a direct conversion kit, you'll need the euro lenses anyway, if you do a projector...well, the euros give you more space, but not much difference then.
I agree with Cyber's post above. Now when buying Asian-made "Euro" lights for W126, they may be a mostly cosmetic upgrade, as you never really know how good they'll be.
But the Bosch OEM Euro lights, with the E-code higher quality glass lens, better reflector, H4 bulb, etc. is a BIG step up as far as quantity and quality of light on the road.
I put in a 5300K temp H4 hi/lo HID conversion, and the light on the road, as well as the light pattern/dispersion, is just outstanding. Whe you figure $200 for a decent used Bosch set of Euro lights, plus $280 for the HID hi/lo H4 kit, it's a monster of an upgrade for not much money.
If only W126 horsepower upgrades had as much bang for the buck!
I'm not sure who told you the above info but when ever I have put Euro's into a US spec car one's ability to see at night is Greatly increased!!
I'm running Xenon's in my fog lights and 90/130's in the Euro's. Compared to a US car the amount of light Drastic! I have the utmost confidence running back roads Hard at night w/ this setup, where as w/ the stock set up I feel hard pressed to run at 5/10th's.
If Euro's were a straight cosmetic upgrade I wouldn't have wasted my time and $$ on getting the read deal Bosch units.

I beg to differ, they euros definently put out more light, no question about it. Sometimes when I drive the sdl, which has us assmeblies I have to search for the light actually on the ground. Terribly hard to see by. Euros are much better, you will be thrilled with your decision. Oh yeah, just get you some used euros, they serve the same function and with little pitting they'll be as good as new ones.
I actually swapped my euro light for the america lights. I thought it looked better but light dispersal was bad! I have a couple of euro lights as well which I am putting up for sale but I need the glass back hence will sell without the glass. Make an offer if interested.
