Hey all. Was just wanting to know what your guys normal water temp is while driving and at idle.
Thanks

idealy it should be about 80*C. However, if you're in high traffic and not moving much, it can go up as much as 100*C. Anything more than that, I would be worried about if driven for a while. Anytime the engine is hot, pull over and turn off the car and let it cool off.
If someone has problems with water temp, it could be the following things
1) water pump being bad
2) stuck thermostat
3) in need of a coolant flush (important to use mercedes/porsche coolant, and not some green crap)
hello.when i first got my 91 300sel the temp would go up around 100c.put on new water pump belts hoses, but the big issue was radiator needed cleaning.took to radiator shop had it boiled out, temp gauge stays around 83c even when real hot out, been very hot around chicago lately.i always stay on top of my hoses radiator elec fans and belts because nothing will ruin a car quicker than it running hot.
The temperature normally stays near 80C on both of my MB's ('87 560SEL, '87 560SEC) in non-summer months.
In the summer, Las Vegas will get all the way to HOT!! I've found that the engine temperature guage mimics the outside temperature - if it is 110F outside then the engine stays around 110C, etc. Stopped in traffic with 115F air temp, the SEL will still get to the equivalent - 115C, and maybe a little more. Don't know what the road temperature is on a day that hot but it has to be at least ten degrees over air temp.
I put a new viscous fan clutch on the SEC a couple of months ago and it now stays at least ten degrees C cooler in the summer. Next payday the SEL gets one too.
Jonathan - make me a deal!!

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
Mine always stays between 80-90 whatever the weather or driving conditions. However,on a warm day especially if the car has been sitting in the sun,the electric fan switches in immediately the car is started, even from dead cold.
Is this normal or a fault? anyone else have this happen?
My dad says the car has always done that and he suspects it relates to the position of the thermostat for the electric fans.
