I have a friend who wants to sell this 1987 300SDL diesel Benz. It has 220,000, a few dings here and there, needs a plastic right headlight retainer and the trans shifts erractically but doesn't slip. The vehicle also needs state inspection. Your input on a value would be appreciated.
Thanks John
Are you serious? I recently got a 1985 300d on the road and love it and this opportunity came up.The trans issue scares me a little bit but according to what I read it's a vacum problem which can be solved at minimal cost.
Thanks for your estimate.
John
that’s not much for an MB diesel but it takes its toll on the chassis – what if any front suspension work have you had, 220 k is its max. Engine and tranny mounts, subframe bushings, flex discs, drive shaft bearing, rear axle assembly, all become suspect at those miles. Parts and labor for that can be pricey. Add to that some dents and dings and a strange acting transmission – did it receive proper service all its life? – more than likely other cosmetic bits you did not mention…
I'm not sure what the condition of the suspension is or if there are other problems with the car but I will check it out. At least I have an idea of it's value. Thanks for all your help.

yes, $3000 sounds right.
A 300SDL for $3k? Dude, I'll buy it for that price. Of course, after checking it out properly.. Most of the time I see them for $5k+ easy..
jdc.. I admire your posts, but when it comes to determining real-world selling prices, you seem to low-ball. A 220k 300SDL in that condition would sell for around $4500-5000 depending in what region in the country you're in. It all of its problems where fixed, it could sell for about $1000 more.
