RE: spy shots of new S-class

At least the 140s have a solid, substantial look to them – the massive C pillar, for example, along with the I AM A BENZ front end.

Man, compared to that Honda-looking thing the 140s look pretty good…

I like the early W140s the best, 92-94, the models like the 300SE, 300SD, and 500SEL, they look more like the W126, but after 95, I didn't like them as much, nice cars though, you can definately see the lines of the W126 in them.

I think the W140 was just an extension of the W126, like I think the W126 was just an extension of the W116. As far as style goes, they all followed similar themes and evolved over time.

I like the W140 at least the bigger versions of it, any small Benz sedan seems like an oxymoron.

JUMBOshrimp

Love the 80's SL roadsters but the rinky-dink kompressors don't do it for me either.

OK, now you guys are starting to wear your "W126ness" on your sleeves[}:)] I drive a short wheelbase W140 AND a 190E 2.6. Two things NEVER said about my S-class is, "Wow, how small!" and about my 190, "gee, you car is a light wieght"[:p] In fact, since AMGin' the 190, I catch more looks in it than the W140. People EXPECT the W140 to eclipse thangs and trap even light beams when it rolls up, but they are thoroughly [:0]! when it happens with a six huner'd grilled-up, euro lighted, 17 inched monoblocked 190[;)] Step your game up![8D]

RE: spy shots of new S-class

I have never liked the Nissan-ization of side styling: the line that reaches along the rear quarter panel then along the "belt-line" of the doors and onto the front fender. The line should, to my eye, run unbroken. The classic cars that we all think of as beatiful have it, both new and old. The clumsiness of breaking the line at the windshield a la Lotus Elite/Eclat and newer Nissans is like reaching for something that isn't there: you wish you hadn't once ya done it.

A new "S" for me is no longer an "obscure object of desire". It is mundane and banal.
