Replacing the rear rotors on the 1991 300 SE due to warpage and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with ATE rotors. The local Import house keeps these in stock and I remember using them on VW's years ago and I get a great deal on them. I thought about machining them but replacing them is cheaper so it's a no brainer. Anyone have anything to say about these rotors? [8D]
The only luck I've had with machining ATE rotors is BAD. They're in common use on V*lvo, MB, VW/A*di and Sob. Even after only light machining (.010), they have warped after a few weeks, especially on cars that are (IMNHO) underbraked, like Volvo.
I've installed them on a number of 126's, 124's, 123's, 116's, 107's and 140's w/o issue.
ATE, Balo etc.. they all work about the same. I'm about to try zimmerman cross drills on my SEC just to see what they're like..
Drop a line, I can prob. beat who ever's price on rotors, pads etc..
Thanks for the comments, I went ahead with the ATE's and new pads. Nice and easy job for a change, about a half an hour including clean up. Jhodg5ck, thanks for the offer on purchase, I paid $26.25 per rotor and $16 for the pads. JFK, how does that compare to what you can do price wise? Anyway, road test confirms no more brake vibration so the missus is happy and so am I. [8D]
16$ pads?? I don't know of any OEM pad manufactuer that sells pads for that cheap... What did you put on there?
If you paid 20 something a disc, that's dirt cheap!
Jonathan- The pads are Pagid Bremsbelage german pads from Italy (so does that makes it a Mercedes Fiat now?). I get a deal through the owner of the parts house and I've been pretty happy with the parts I get from them. Looking at the miles I got from the last set of pads and rotors I found I got about 40K from the pads and rear rotors but the front rotors seem OK so I just replaced the pads there and was pretty close to the wear pins. All in all about $125 for the whole DIY job. Bet Midas wouldn't be able to do it for that eh?
