hi guys
what does the term engine misfire mean?
what happens in it exactly?,
the car in question is an 1985 300sd turbo diesel,
my dad drove the car which i have been behind for months,he said the engine is misfiring
(w126 that too a diesel version is pretty rare in india, plus this was our old vehicle)
what should be done to repair it?what happens if we dont?
an mech(supposed to be the best for these old mercs) here told it will require the engine to be opened and will cost a minimum of usd 2200 (in indian currency 1 lac rupess) mostly parts as labour is pretty cheap in india
the current owner is asking usd 8000 for the car!(inr:rs 3 lac 95 thousand) ok considering people here are asking for 12 to 15 k dollars for the petrol /later date models(ie 90,91)
it has done abt 80k miles,so does the problem correlate with the miles done?..keeping in mind that it has been in india since last 14 years(came into india in 91) and has been completely in the hands of such mechanics who self proclaim them selves to be merc experts....
this buy would be a more of an sentimental buy rather than a sensible one...and wont be used much....
what do you guys suggest? go ahead with it?
They never made W126 diesels in the UK so I am not sure which engine will be in it. If it is the same engine as in the W123 series, the problem could simply be tappets that need adjusting.
If not it could be any number of things but the diesel engines are very hard wearing and it is unusual for them to suffer a serious failure at that kind of mileage.
It maybe these mechanics want to rip you off.
A compession test should determine if it is a serious problem or not.

Diesel engines don’t really “misfire as with a gas engine where there is no spark or the spark comes at the wrong time. In diesels the problem is poor compression in one or more cylinders.
