Of course in my continuing bad luck I got a flat tire, but I realized that the spare tire has the old style rims, and I have the newer post-1985 rims. When I tried to put the spare on the car lifted off the ground which required me to get a new tire. Are the lug nuts different sizes for the rims? And if they are where can I buy lug nuts for the spare I have?

I’m not sure I understand the question – was there a problem with the size of the spare rim or were the wheel bolts too short to put the spare on safely?

You need the short lug bolts that can be found on early W126s or W116s (450SEL) with either steel wheels or 1st style alloys. The new style long lug bolts will hit the brake shoes in the back.
Yup, early steels / alloys have wheel bolts that are 29mm from the end of the thread to the flange. Later ones are about 15mm longer.
I had the same trouble last week when I needed to swap my AMG rims for the originals to get the AMG's polised. AMG rims also use the shorter bolts.
Got mine from a mate who works at a Benz dealership, but I guess the only other option if you don't wanna pay big$ is scour the scrapyards.
