I have a 1990 Mercedes Benz 560 sel. The car runs perfect, with one exception. There is an odour of fuel which enters into the cabin when driving. When ever I leave the car parked in the enclosed garage, the garage area smells like fuel aswell. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your expertise on this matter.
Open the fuel door, there should be a hole just below the filler tube, take a coat hanger or something long and thin and push it through this opening. That hole is the overflow tube that runs down towards the passenger rear wheel. I had the same thing happen to me and then I noticed a fuel puddle around the filler cap. Once I cleared the overflow tube the smell was gone in about 30 mins.

Hope this helps. [8D]
Hehe. a friend of mine who has a w123 230E had a fuel leak trough the owerflow tube. It fell off, and the fuel leaked into the trunk under the carpet.
So we mounted a new hose, and screwed out the carpet in the trunk. Then we flushed the trunk (the trunk on a w123 (don't know if the w126 has it) has 2 draining holes in the trunk) with water. And the smell was gone [:)]
Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. Benzdoc, you hit the nail right on the head. I just got my car back from the mercedes benz dealer here in Vancouver, B.C., and sure enough the "EGA" valve was leaking.
