I think it is based on interior and cargo volume. While the W124 is a bit tighter than I would like in the back, it is massively roomy up front and has a rather large trunk. I've noticed that many new cars are rated larger, but feel smaller, and I can only figure it is because of the cabin shapes with the windows pushed way out front and back. That would create extra volume, but it is wasted volume.
I wonder why you have a 32MPG highway rating and I have a 33MPG rating for essentially the same car and year? Is the final drive different on ASD equipped cars, maybe?
