first post here. i have got some good tips from this community for work with an older MB.
i have a 300ce 24v from 1991 thats not starting. there is no spark. just engine turning and nothing else.
spark plugs are fine. cables are fine. the coil is fine. EZL ''seems'' fine.hm
bought the MB code reader. only fault was the crankshaft sensor. replaced it tonight and no difference.hm
the car for the last few months was starting only from second try. like starts and then dies right away.hm
got worse and now its dead.hm
has new battery
alternator
crankshaft sensor
p.s.
after turning it like ten times there is a bit of gas smell in the interior. not in the engine bay but like in the middle of the car. dont see any leaks under the car.hm somebody was talking about fuel pressure being the cause of bad start. but not sure about it in this case.hmm
if you clear the code and try starting it again, is it still giving the no crankshaft sensor (CKP) error? there's two sensors, the CKP (L5) at the back of the engine, and the CMP (camshaft position sensor, L5/1) at the front.
how are you verifying there is no spark ?
The EZL ignition control unit on those M104 CIS-E engines is a known failure point, and very expensive to replace. the later M104.99x HFM-SFI engines did away with it entirely in favor of coil-over-plugs and the main ECM managing ignition along with injection.
smelling gas after cranking with no spark is not unusual.
Did you find a spark with this tester ?
Move the selector through the gears and try again .
The switch to stop it starting in anything but P might be faulty .. Thats if you have no spark.
In most cases I can recall, if the NSS switch is bad, the engine will not turn over. I believe the OP's problem is no fire at the plugs.
OP,
Are the fuel pumps running? Have you pulled the cap and inspected the insides and the rotor? What is the resistance reading at the crankshaft sensor (pull at the EZL and check resistance)? It needs to read something greater than 650 ohms. Lastly, check your output at the EZL.
he clearly stated he does NOT have spark, which leads me to suspect A) CKP, and B) EZL. He replaced the CKP, so assuming the replacement was a good replacement and its properly connected, that leaves the EZL.
we did all the checks mentioned above. also going all the way again through the ignition system.
now it seems the hammer is not getting electricity through. i found a new ezl but ill start with the hammer then
Thumbs up to that . Buy as i have more hammers than cheque books, then hammer will be the first thing .The saying over here is To Let Sleeping Dogs Lie
was waiting for parts. got them today. just replaced the rotor and the cover where the spark cables connect to. no difference. just turning and nothing else.hm
i could go for the EZL. but what if its not that either :|
I do believe I'd be in there with a multimeter trying to verify things like timing pulses from the CKP are getting to the EZL, that it has power, and so forth, before I'd just replace one.
I would check the alarm and imobiliser . I had this no spark .It was found to be the after market alarm Removed alarm wires from the coil and it started up.
yeah, aftermarket alarm, all bets off. remove the alarm, find the circuits they cut, and splice them back together the way they were stock.
THEN we can talk about troubleshooting. the factory alarm just interrupts the starter motor. aftermarket alarms often disable the ignition and/or fuel injection.
there is no alarm in this car. just central locking?!
however there is a webasto installed. it was eating the battery so i disconnected it. but no change/ just cranking.hm
i did send my EZL to germany for check and repair. they did it. said it was broken. i put it in today. started from half a turn. exhaust was somewhat louder than before. on the first corner out of the driveway it choked a bit. like very low rpms and almost stalling. ok. got on the freeway. all like usual. i dont think it had less power or more. felt the same. but very loud exhaust. and white foam when started first time.hmm
so after about 6 km. going from 80km/h (50 miles an hour?!) to full stop at the red light and the car died. was shifting down smoothly and when i stopped it just went out. started it with long turning and waiting. as soon i put in gear it stalled. towed it to local merc expert.hmm
it has a webasto installed. maybe its the wiring going crazy. vacuum leak somewhere maybe. maybe the EZL just burned again in like 20 min? but from what.hmm
maybe just burn it. i think it hates me. but was so nie drive it again. been standing for what now. 6 months or 5. shame on me. but i tried most of the things.hmm
around 500 usd for rebuliding my EZL by the way. in ECU.DE
