According to the long range forecast, we're going to be getting a lot more of it. Plus....it's going to drop temps and snow at about 8degress....something that rarely if ever happened. You were almost always assured that if it got that cold, it wouldn't snow here. One night it's supposed to hit 6degrees.
Gotta admit, I'm King of The Road with the 4Matic and these crushed walnut shells snow tires. Drivers are awful here, beyond description.....that's the biggest problem;staying outa their way...lol
I have snow tires and chains, but I won't go out if it snows here, mostly because of the other drivers and also because I wold need to put the chains on to get out of our driveway...lol. I really only put the snow tires on so they can help me get home if the snow hits while I am out, and because they help on ice.
Safe philosophy...save you from getting your car smashed. One winter was so bad here that I was giving rides to people so they could survive. What I didn't realize is that they were bringing so much snow into my car, that when melted it overflowed off the rubber mats and went down into the carpets. Didn't really notice until late spring and a mold smell. I was lucky to save the carpets..really lucky.
What brand/model are these crushed walnut shell tires? I've used several different generations of Blizzaks and been happy with all of them but tried General Altimax Arctics a couple of years ago and like them, too. And this is on RWD 124s that were pretty much undriveable on snow with regular tires. Night and day difference with dedicated snow tires. Starting, stopping, turning... the transformation was nothing short of miraculous.
I flew into Portland for business years ago, right in the middle of an ice storm. I had no trouble getting around with my rental car but the locals? Forget it. They were paralyzed. Seemed to have no concept of keeping momentum to keep from sliding into the center of a cloverleaf, etc. Lots of entertainment for me and my fellow PA travelers.
They are from a tire chain over here called Les Schwab Tires. They were sold to me as the equivalent of Blizzaks. I never ran Blizzaks, so I can't compare. However over the very long term of owning this car, it's had many iterations of snow tires. These are by far the best. I can't even get them to loose traction until there are puddles of water and leaves in the fall to test the 4Matic function. This is their fourth or fifth season.....probably ditch them for next yr given their age.
The denizens on the rainy side have no idea how to drive in snow & ice...rain is their thing. Over here if we get enough snow, most folks stay at home and the rest basically know what they're doing. But in the meantime before we get that amount of snow, the locals are just stupid. If they're not creeping along at 5MPH, then they are sliding all over the place and slamming into things. Many never put on snow tires at all and just take the chance. By comparison, when I lived up in the Rockies most knew how to drive in the worst conditions, or didn't drive at all.
I just went outside and checked....I thought they would be some private label tire, but they are Toyo Microbit Compound snow tires. They were said to be equivalent, not 'better' than Blizzaks...I think that probably speaks volumes for Blizzak's reputation...lol.
It's very surreal right now because the snow is on the verge of melting...but....we have 6degree weather coming tonight with more snow. Like the eye of the storm kinda thing...lol.
Meh. If it ain't at least 20 Celsius, it feels cold to me. Worse if there is a wind, with the worst being around areas along the North Sea such as Normandy, Belgium, Holland, etc.
^ Agree with both of you. 4 snows is a dramatic transformation. And also the only way to go through a winter with snow/ice.
The Altimax are in fact Gislaved Nordfrost's, good tire but only available (without special order) in US as Altimax's. But cheaper as Artics, so better anyway.
For this winter season, I am running a set of Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip. While this brand is outside my main preferred tire brands (Michelin, Pirelli, Continental), and snow hasn't really set in just yet these do have excellent traction even when frost sets in and they ride very quietly on the freeway.
Woke up this morning to another 6 inches. I let the dawgs out late and there was no new snow....so it had to cook in the wee hrs to put down the 6 inches.
Still waiting on the bitter cold to happen later today. Then more snow throughout the rest of the week!
I was just thinking about snow ice cream yesterday and how my mom made it, funny!
So I looked at a couple of recipes and I think the one with sweetened condensed milk is over the top. The others are basically snow+cream/milk+sugar=fun. I know it was really simple when my mom made it and rare in her repertoire.
