I know this topic has come up before, but I want to know some peoples opinions....
I am buying new tires for my car, upgrading from 16's to 17's (probably) and just wanted to know some good tires, winters coming up so I need something that will handle well in the snow...
I was looking at the Yokohama Avid H4/V4, they appear to be very good and cheap ... anyone had any experiances with these tires?
I have Avids on my '86 300E (standard). They seem to wear a bit fast but they are very quiet and grippy on drift curves that are wet. I had them rotated recently and two of the tires had nails in them! I noticed one tire with a slow leak, but the second one I did not notice. I like the quiet ride. I don't know about eastern winters for these tires.
If you live upstate and use your 300E as a daily driver than I would REALLY recommend getting some dedicated snow tires (Blizzaks, Alpins, etc.) Any unplowed roads and those H4/V4's will be all over the place or simply spinning in place. I would use them for any other season except the winter.
Don't understand why this is an "upgrade"..watch out on your clearances..I had a set of Yo...

If you are "upgrading" from 16s to 17s, I would guess you will be left with a set of 16 inch wheels.
Why not mount 4 "real snow" tires on the 16s and keep the 17s for summer only. If the H4s are going to wear out rather quickly (and all I have heard is that indeed they do), you end up getting better winter driving tires and you will enjoy the H4s for a longer period of time. The end result is it doesn't cost any more.
Should you be asking yourself the standard question.......why bother...... consider if the 4 "real snow" tires save you only one fender bender, trip into the ditch or slide into the guard rail every 2 years.....they will more than pay for themselves.
Besides.....there ain't no feeling like driving in snow n ice with 4 snows. Everyone else becomes a road-block and a hazard you just drive around. You also get to pull Ford SUVs out of snow banks and parking lots.
