Learning about a/c

can anyone point me in the direction of some good reading on auto a/c , in particular that fitted to 124's (early 90's factory fitted) but otherwise just generally. I'm new to dealing with problems in this area and seem to be wasting money on so called experts so have decided to go the trusted route of DIY but need to gen up.

Also are there any pictures of the physical layout of a/c in w124s to help me get orientated.

I'm asking on the US site since I reckoned you guys will have loads more gen on this subject.

Keith

...good question.

I, unfortunately am also in this quandry - for three years now. Anybody have an answer/suggestions/advice?

My A/C has not blown cold for three years now, and I have gotten numerous estimates - all expensive (possible leak; dye to trace leak; compressor; pump; etc...) But how do you actually determine whats wrong (starting simple)?

I did a mjor service yesterday (30k service on '87 300D-Turbo w/ 150k) and all of a sudden the A/C is blowing cooler (not COLD, but cooler), why is this?

You may want to check aircondition.com. Though I was quite comfortable doing all kinds of wrenching on cars, a/c systems were always a mystery until I started surfing that site. After spending many hours amassing bits of information from the experts in the postings, I'm now quite comfortable that I can do a better job than the local shop.

Diagnosing and repairing your own a/c systems is quite rewarding both personally and financially.
