Engine problem w/ '94 E500

My '94 E500 with 69,000 miles ran poorly today immediately after I filled the tank with gas. It has happened before, but I can't specifically recall the last time. Post fill up today it had rough idle, barely accelerated and what little acceleration it mustered was uneven, and the exhaust smelled like smoke bomb (sulfur?) (exhaust color was normal). After about 15 minutes of running/idling the problem worked itself out - I'm positive it is not a gas quality problem. Any thoughts on what is causing this problem? Thanks in advance.

More than once I've gotten water in fuel. This resulted in horrible idling and driveability -- but no sulfur smell.

Water in gas is typically easy to diagnose. Break into the fuel line and pump out a quantity of gasoline into a clear container. The water settles to the bottom.

If this happens again, just imagine you had a 260E for a few minutes.
I can write a book about poor acceleration, you can't.
More Seriously....
I had a similar problem with a 1994 Volvo 850Turbo" I know, I know it is not a e500. The problem was some kind of deposit at the bottom of the fuel tank. Every time I fueled, those deposits obstructed the fuel pick-up tube. I had the tanks cleaned out and which solved the problem.
